Okay, so we REALLY like smoothies, haha! They’re so easy for us to put in my son’s sippy cup. So, they’re one of our favorite go-to breakfast options. It’s nearly impossible for him to make a mess out of a smoothie in a cup. They’re also super quick on mornings when I’m groggy and not really feeling like “making” breakfast. This Mexican chocolate smoothie was a great boost first thing in the morning.
Why Mexican Chocolate?
The inspiration for this Mexican chocolate smoothie came to me with everyone showing off their fancy cocoa bombs around Christmastime. It got me thinking about when I was a Spanish teacher. Mexican hot chocolate is just a teeny bit different from your standard cocoa. Like the TikTok trend says: “add a little bit of… spice.”
What makes Mexican hot chocolate stand out is usually that there are hints of spice. In a typical Mexican cocoa, you’ll find cinnamon, nutmeg, and cayenne or chili powder. For this smoothie, I try to recreate those flavors while adding nutritious ingredients such as hidden avocado and banana! I promise you can’t taste them at all, but they provide so many great nutrients. I talk all about the great benefits of avocado on my post for Chocolate Banana smoothies with avocado. Find it here. And yes, those smoothies are fairly similar but if you have picky kiddos, that recipe is a great alternative! Or, if you’re just someone who isn’t a fan of spice.
Making the Smoothie
First, you’re going to put your avocado and banana in the blender, followed by your wet ingredients and spices. Now, I highly recommend starting with small amounts for the spices. Remember you can always add more, but you can’t take it out once it’s in. Taste testing is important to get the flavor you want so that the spices aren’t too overpowering for you. This is why I give a bit of wiggle room in the recipe because everyone’s taste is different.
