Now I know what you’re likely thinking. Pizza for breakfast? Absolutely! In this week’s dish, I’ll show you how to turn your favorite weekend grub into a delicious breakfast the entire family will devour. Let’s get started!
Special Equipment or Ingredients Needed:
There are a couple special kitchenware items that you’ll need to make your breakfast pizza. The first is a good quality pizza pan. I love this 16-inch aluminum crisper pan. It works really nicely to make sure that your crust turns out nice and crispy. Because of the holes on the bottom, the pan allows air to get through to the crust. The aluminum also helps so that all of the dough cooks evenly. Next, you’ll also need a basting brush. I use this for both brushing the dough with oil and spreading the country gravy on top. I use a silicone basting brush so that no fibers end up in the food like you could with a bristle brush.
In terms of special ingredients, you’ll need fresh pizza dough. I honestly buy the prepackaged fresh dough from my grocery store. That being said, you can also feel free to make your dough from scratch! This recipe from Taste & Tell gets stellar reviews if you want to try making it.
You’ll also want 1 cup of prepared country gravy. I make mine from scratch normally, but I’ve also used gravy mix packets before in the past and they taste great. You can look forward to seeing my homemade gravy recipe soon!
Making of Breakfast Pizza:
To start off, this was my first time using fresh dough. Here are the things I highly suggest for beginners:
- Heavily flour the surface you’re rolling on
- Flour your hands
- Rub flour on the rolling pin.
- If the dough starts feeling sticky or starts sticking to you or any surfaces, add more flour.
- After rolling on one side, flip over and roll on the other. Repeat this process every couple minutes. This helps the dough keep the shape you roll it into.
- Do not try to toss your pizza dough in the air. It’ll fall on the floor and you’ll be BIG sad.
- It’s okay if it’s not perfectly round!
Now, when I make my pizza, I pre-bake the dough partially so that it holds the toppings better. A lot of the prepackaged doughs say not to do this, but I find it turns out better. You also risk overcooking the eggs if you cook the crust without pre-baking. This is why I recommend soft scrambling the eggs too, so that they don’t overcook. You can see exactly how I assemble the pizza in the following pictures:
Recipe:
Breakfast Pizza
Equipment
- Pizza Pan
- Rolling Pin
- Nonstick Skillet
Ingredients
- 16 oz fresh pizza dough
- 1-2 tbsp olive oil
- 1/2 tsp pepper, divided
- 3/4 tsp salt, divided
- 1/2 tsp garlic powder
- 1/2 tsp Italian seasoning
- 1 cup prepared country gravy
- 1/2 tbsp butter
- 5 large eggs
- 1 tbsp milk
- 4 pieces bacon, cooked and crumbled
- 2 green onions, sliced thinly
- 1 cup cheddar jack cheese, shredded
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 450°. Spray pizza pan with nonstick spray.
- Place your pizza dough on your pizza pan. Pinch the edges upward to form a lip that will become the crust of your pizza. Brush olive oil over all of the dough using a basting brush. Sprinkle with 1/2 tsp of salt, half of the pepper, and all remaining seasonings. Bake 7 minutes.
- Meanwhile, in a nonstick skillet over medium heat, melt butter.
- In a small bowl, whisk eggs and milk. Add to the hot pan. Cook and scramble eggs until JUST beginning to firm up. You do not want them to be fully set otherwise they'll overcook when the pizza bakes. When they just begin to firm up, sprinkle with remaining salt and pepper.
- When the crust finishes pre-baking, brush the country gravy over top leaving a 1 inch border all the way around. Spread soft scrambled eggs over the gravy, then sprinkle the bacon over top, then add the green onion. Lastly, add the cheese ensuring that you sprinkle some along the edge as well.
- Bake the pizza for 10-15 minutes or until cheese is melted, eggs are cooked, and pizza crust is golden brown on bottom. Let sit for 5-10 minutes before slicing into 8 equal servings.
- Serve and enjoy!
