This week’s recipe puts a spin on a traditional Hawaiian favorite, Loco Moco. Loco moco is traditionally comprised of burgers and gravy over rice with a fried egg on top. When I made this recipe, I decided to jazz it up by using bacon cheddar burgers (which would be delicious on their own) and mushroom gravy. Let’s get started!
Recommended Supplies to Have:
For this recipe, here are the supplies that I recommend having on hand:
- A spatula with a skinny edge that will help for flipping.
- My favorite spatula for flipping anything from pancakes to burgers is this Norpro Favorite Spatula.
- A large mixing bowl.
- This mixing bowl set with silicone bases is super handy.
- An extra large skillet with deep sides.
- We have this Cuisinart 5 1/2 qt skillet and it was perfect for this recipe.
Making Loco Moco:
The first portion of the recipe is assembling and cooking up the burgers as is shown below in the following pictures. I typically like large chunky burgers, so I leave decent sized pieces of onions or bacon. If you prefer smaller pieces, that’s fine too! For this recipe, I typically separate the meat mixture into 6 burgers, but I made a little mini slider for our toddler this time. I also usually start the rice at this time.
After cooking up the burgers, I transfer them to a plate. I then make the mushroom gravy in the same pan. I don’t wash out the pan because the juices from the burgers and the bits from the bottom of the pan add flavor to the gravy. When I make the gravy, I start by sautéing the mushrooms and onions, then I add seasonings and finish by adding flour and broth. I whisk until it thickens. I then add the burgers back and fully coat them in the gravy.
After adding the burgers to the gravy, I let them simmer and in this time I make the fried eggs for the top.
After everything finishes cooking, serve the burgers and gravy on top of a bed of rice. Place the fried egg on top. So yummy!
Loco Moco Recipe:
Loco Moco with Bacon Cheddar Burgers and Mushroom Gravy
Equipment
- Large, deep skillet
Ingredients
Bacon Cheddar Burgers
- 2 lbs hamburger
- 6 strips bacon, cooked and crumbled
- 1 cup shredded cheddar jack cheese
- 1/4 onion, minced
- 4 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tbsp worcestershire sauce
- 3/4 tsp pepper
- 1 tbsp dijon mustard
- 1 tbsp olive oil
Gravy Ingredients
- 2 tbsp butter
- 8 oz mushrooms, sliced
- 1/4 onion, chopped
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tbsp worcestershire sauce
- 1 tbsp Italian seasoning
- salt and pepper to taste
- 1/4 cup flour
- 2 cups beef broth
Other Essential Ingredients
- cooked rice for serving
- 6 fried eggs, cooked to your preferred level of doneness
Instructions
- Combine all of the burger ingredients except for olive oil together in a large mixing bowl until well combined.
- Form the burger mixture into 6 equal sized patties.
- Heat olive oil over medium-high heat in a large, deep skillet. When oil is hot enough to sizzle, add patties carefully. Cook each side for approximately 5-7 minutes or until each burger reaches 160 degrees or your preferred level of doneness. Set burgers aside on a plate.
- In the same pan, without washing out crispy bits and pan juices, melt the butter over medium-high heat. Add the mushrooms, onions, and garlic and sauté for 5-7 minutes. Add worcestershire, Italian seasoning and salt and pepper, cooking an additional 2-3 minutes.
- Add flour and fully coat mushroom mixture to form a roux. Cook 2-3 minutes or until the roux is lightly toasted. Then gradually add broth 1/2 cup at a time, whisking frequently in between additions. Make sure you scrape the bottom of the pan to deglaze it and add more flavor. Once the gravy begins boiling, reduce heat to low.
- Continue whisking until gravy is thickened and then add hamburger patties. Make sure the patties are fully submerged.
- Simmer for five minutes on low to ensure everything is heated all the way through.
- Serve each burger patty with gravy on top of a bed of rice. Top each with a fried egg.
- Enjoy!
