Pizza is good no matter what toppings are on it, but this one was *MMMMWAH!* chef’s kiss. If you like BBQ AND you like pizza, this is right up your alley. Topped with two layers of gooey cheese, tangy red onions, smoked sausage with a BBQ sauce base on an herb seasoned crust, this pizza will blow your mind. So, let’s get cookin’.
Special Ingredients and Kitchen Equipment Needed:
For this BBQ smoked sausage pizza, you’ll want to have a couple different specialty items to make life easier:
- Large perforated pizza pan – Personally I like a perforated pizza pan because it allows air to circulate around the bottom of the pan which gives you a crispier crust.
- Silicone basting brush – A silicone basting brush makes it much easier to evenly distribute oil over top of our pizza dough before baking.
- Rolling pin – Unless you know how to professionally toss your pizza dough… just use a rolling pin before your dough ends up on the floor, haha!
- Pizza cutter – You likely already have one, but if not, here’s the one that we use. It’s affordable and small!
In terms of special ingredients, the biggest one is fresh pizza dough. Personally, I just use premade fresh pizza dough from the grocery store deli, but you’re also free to make your own pizza dough if there’s a recipe you like!
Aside from that, you may also want a fancy BBQ sauce! These are some that get great reviews:
- Fords Gourmet Bone Suckin Sauce
- Charlie Vergos Rendezvous
- Jim Beam Maple Bourbon
- Cow Town Night of the Living BBQ
For ours we used O Organics Kansas City Style Smoky BBQ. You could also use Sweet Baby Ray’s or really any sauce you like!
Pictures of BBQ Smoked Sausage Pizza:
In these pictures you can see how the crust was oiled and seasoned, then partially baked before adding barbecue sauce and toppings. There is also a layer of cheese both directly on top of the BBQ sauce as well as on top of the smoked sausage for this pizza. I feel that this helps hold everything in place and who doesn’t love cheese anyway?
Recipe:
BBQ Smoked Sausage Pizza
Equipment
- Aerated Pizza Pan
- Basting Brush
- Pizza Cutter
Ingredients
- 16 oz fresh pizza dough, rolled out on a floured surface into a circle I buy my pizza dough from the deli of our grocery store.
- 2 tbsp olive oil
- 1/4 tsp pepper
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp garlic powder
- 1/2 tsp Italian seasoning
- 1/2-1 cup BBQ sauce, to taste. You can use any BBQ sauce based on whatever flavors you prefer.
- 1 1/2 cups shredded cheddar jack cheese, divided
- 1 1/2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese, divided
- Heaping 1/2 cup red onions, sliced into thin rings and then quartered into small strips
- 6 oz kielbasa smoked sausage, sliced into discs
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 450° and spray aerated pizza pan with nonstick cooking spray.
- Place your rolled out pizza dough onto your pizza pan, spreading it our toward the edges as necessary. Pinch or roll the edges of the dough upward and inward to form the outer lip of your crust.
- Brush olive oil all over the dough using a basting brush. Sprinkle all seasonings onto the dough, including the lip for the crust. Bake 7 minutes.
- Once the dough is partially cooked, top with as much barbecue sauce, using more if you prefer a saucier pizza. Spread the sauce evenly using your basting brush.
- Sprinkle with half of each type of cheese, then the onions, then the kielbasa, then the remaining cheese. Make sure you sprinkle cheese on the crust as well to fully cover the pizza.
- Bake for 13-15 minutes or until crust reaches your preferred level of doneness. Let rest 5-10 minutes before slicing.
- Slice into 8 equal pieces then serve, and enjoy!
Notes
And that’s all there is to it! This BBQ pizza was so simple but so delicious. And you could even add other toppings like bell peppers or change out the smoked sausage for chicken. The possibilities are endless!

This seems like a new idea -partially baked and the add barbecue sauce and toppings. I will have to try this out. My son loves pizza! And we try and sneak in ways to make them special. I am going to check out your muffin recipe as well.

I find that partially baking it leads to a bit more of a crispier crust! I hope you enjoy! 😊
